If the first high bit is set, this tells you immediately that the 8-bit signed byte is negative.
To convert, flip the bottom 7 bits from (1)111 0101 to 000 1010 and add 1 to get 000 1011 with is 8 + 2 + 1 or 11 --> Giving -11 -- which is negative and oddly enough odd.
